Six boys and six girls affiliated with the Averill Park Running Club have qualified for the Junior Olympic National Championships in Omaha, Neb., by virtue of top-three finishes in the USA Track & Field Region I Junior Olympic Championships, held at Averill Park June 25-27.
Christopher Dobert (3rd, bantam high jump), Peter Minotti (1st, midget high jump), Colin Gettig (2nd, midget high jump), Darrick Evensen (3rd, 3,000 race walk), Kyle Lindley (2nd, midget discus) and James Pennell (2nd, bantam shot put) finished in the top three.
Shelby Ward (3rd, bantam high jump), Julia Bendrin (2nd, midget high jump), Morgan Wheeler (2nd, bantam long jump), Diana Salisbury (3rd, youth discus), Stephenie Litchko (3rd, bantam shot put) and Jennifer Budesheim (3rd, midget shot put) were the girls who qualified for Averill Park.
Three relay teams also finished in the top three. Averill Park placed second and third in the boys' bantam 4x100 relay, and third in the girls' bantam 4x100 relay.
Athletes who qualify for nationals must pay their own way, making it likely that many of the regional qualifiers will forego their spot in the national event. USA TRACK & FIELD REGION I JUNIOR …
