Qld: Reef Helicopters receives award for aviation safety

BRISBANE, Feb 14 AAP - Cairns-based Reef Helicopters has received a major award foraviation safety.

Reef Helicopters Pty Ltd won the Aviation Safety Foundation's top award in the aircraftoperator category.

The private company operates helicopters for the Queensland Emergency Services Department,maintaining hangar facilities on Thursday Island and Horn Island in the Torres Strait.

"Reef Helicopters' Horn Island base is one of the busiest helicopter emergency servicein eastern Australia," said chief executive officer David Earley.

"Our role includes everything from conducting search and rescue operations, flyingsick or injured people to hospitals, assisting with evacuations in natural disasters andeven fighting fires with our 500 litre firebombing bucket."

Reef Helicopters is tendering for emergency medical service contracts with the SouthAustralian and West Australian state governments.

The company is also vying for an RAAF contract to provide five helicopters for searchand rescue services throughout Australia.
